Like many in our family, Kathy grew up in a military home. Her father was a U.S. Air Force Navigator, and she lived in many places. Her Dad was born in New York (White Plains) and grew up in Connecticut while her mother is from Cape Cod, Mass. Kathy has spent many Summers on the Cape with her family and she considers that to be her home town. Her father's last Air Force assignment was at Nellis AFB, NV, and he retired in Las Vegas. Kathy attended all four years of high school at Chapparel High in Las Vegas where she graduated #1 (Valedictorian) in her class. She was also very active in student government (Secretary of the Senior Class) and she was Captain of the school drill team. In fact, Kathy was selected as the first runner up in the National Miss Drill Team USA competition. According to Grandpa Platt, Kathy should have been selected as the winner, except for politics that were obvious to most people. I know I would have voted for her! Kathy was also a member of the National Honor Society.
Kathy spend her first year of college at Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff, AZ, where she had a full scholarship. Eventually, she transfered to the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) where she graduate in December 1983 at the top of her Nursing class. Kathy is the hardest working and most impressive women I know. To some of our children, she may seem a little inflexible at times, but this is simply her way of maintaining consistance amid a great deal of change--a sort of survival behavior. The truth is, she has demonstrated tremendous flexibility and I know she loves all of us very much. I know this because I know her, but also because I know what she has voluntarily been through for us.
Kathy was an angel for taking me on in the first place. And, I don't think we should ever forget that she gave up her home and her job; and, she moved away from all her family and friends to live in Illinois and be a Mom (K-Mom) to nine children ...not to mention, the wife to this desperate old man. Can you imagine the stress. It must have been a very difficult decision, but she says "I had an answer to my prayers." So, she packed up her two little ones, and all their belonging, and came to live in Illinois with the widowed Captain and his seven children. It wasn't easy either (I remember hearing her cry to herself in the bathroom). Thankfully, she stuck it out. Kathy and I have grown a lot together and we've had many wonderful experiences. She has a humble and firm testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and she has been a great blessing to our family. She has been good to me and I love her. I'm a happy man.
Today, Kathy is a Registered Nurse who works for a local OB/GYN clinic. Her doctor employer says he could not survive in business without her. She's also an ACE certified aerobics instructor with 24-Hour Fitness which has her traveling to the fitness center each morning at about 5:30 AM. This is a demanding responsibility, both physically and emotionally. If you've ever attended an aerobics class, you'll know what I mean. And it's even more difficult if you're the instructor. Kathy also serves as a volunteer instructor for "Tar Wars" (an organization dedicated to teaching elementary school children about the harmful effects of tobacco and cigarette smoking). On her day off, she goes into classrooms and teaches young children this important subject. And finally, Kathy serves in the Primary Children's Organization at church where she is the Ward Nursury Leader. She loves this calling and all the little ones. Oh ya, and she continues to take care of all her family chores: housekeeping, cooking, laundry, shopping, etc. Not to mention, she does a fine job taking care of this cranky old military veteran. |
